This Hapa Necklace, which translates to 'half' in Hawaiian, is a delicate combination of colorful surf polished pukas and a beautiful 9mm Tahitian pearl. This pearl has high luster and gorgeous natural chocolate shades to compliment the variety of heirloom puka colors which span from deep brown to lavender to baby pink..
I chose a warm chestnut color cord to highlight the warm tones of this particular Tahitian pearl. The cord is hand twisted 6ply rope, and I think it offers a beautiful natural aesthetic that compliments the smooth and polished features of the puka shells and pearl. The necklace gets the 'Hapa' name from this design detail ~ as it is half rope, half shell.
The shell detail (14 pukas and one pearl) is delicate and feminine, and measures 2 inches. The miniature pukas are incredibly dainty, the smallest measuring less than 1/4 of an inch across.
The closure is created by a small loop and a sliding pearl. Slide the small puka through the loop and cinch the opening closed using the sliding pearl. Easy to use and very secure.
